Online & In-person, Available in-person at 248 Ossington Ave.
Andrew Winchur
(he/him)
Education: MEd, MES
Background: Andrew’s therapeutic practice builds on his earlier training in popular education for social change. As an anti-oppressive educator, he has developed a profound respect for the often-stigmatized knowledge, skills, and histories that working people draw on to survive the daily challenges of capitalism and empire.
Thanks to his full-time work managing a small team of social workers for a local housing and shelter provider, Andrew is also attuned to the ways that seemingly private forms of suffering and distress are rooted in the social ills of our society: homophobia, racism, class disparity, housing precarity, inflation, the cost-of-living crisis, and more.
Through Andrew’s work as a Partner Assault Response (PAR) facilitator, he has learned how to call men into a new relationship with the interconnected systems of cis-hetero-patriarchy. In this feminist-informed men’s work, a client-centred and anti-oppressive approach involves lending care and attention to the ways in which men are themselves wounded by oppressor-consciousness — without compromising on the accountability needed to forge a safer, more equal world for their partners, families and wider communities.
Specialty:
- Couples work: relational challenges, feminist-informed, polyamory and ENM, queer and non-traditional relationships
- Examining contradictions and problems of masculinity
- Queer identity and belonging
- Navigating life transitions and identity changes
- Unpacking unsettling emotions such as shame, anger and grief
Approach:
- Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)
- Narrative Therapy
- Feminist
- RLT (Terry Real)
Perspective: Andrew brings a client-centred approach to his psychotherapy work. Each person who walks into his office brings a unique history and set of struggles, and is deserving of mental health care that honours that uniqueness. Andrew works to join each client he works with in their experiences and distress on their own terms and using their own language for understanding.
